A RARE BLUE AND WHITE STEM CUP, YUAN STYLE, QING DYNASTY Expert’s note The provenance from an old German diplomatic collection indicates that the present lot dates back to the Qing dynasty at least. As frequently observed in Qing revival wares, the potter did not merely reproduce the classical stem-cup form with its characteristic bamboo-form foot, as exemplified by the Metropolitan Museum piece shown in the literature comparison below, but subtly reinterpreted it. Particularly noteworthy is the pale celadon glaze applied to the foot, lending the vessel a distinctive character. China, 1644-1912. The deep bowl rising to a gently everted rim, supported on a tall hollow splayed foot modeled in the form of a section of bamboo, its ribs accentuated by horizontal fluting and covered in a pale celadon glaze thinning to white over the raised areas. The interior with a lotus medallion and diaper-pattern band encircling the rim, the exterior decorated with a composite lotus scroll with alternating views of the flowerheads, above upright lotus-petal lappets enclosing ruyi clouds and circles around the base, all painted in deep sumaliqing blue. Dimensions: Diameter 11 cm Literature comparison: Compare a blue and white stem cup, dated ca. first half of the 14th century, 9.2 cm diameter, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 1986.97.1.
