A FINE BRASS FRAGMENT DEPICTING VISHNU, INDIA, ORISSA, 17TH-18TH CENTURY Expert’s note The broad face, rounded limbs, and precisely articulated ornament are characteristic of the Orissan brass tradition. The sculpture’s distinctive presence rests in the contrast between the smooth modeling of the flesh and the intricate linear detail of the crown and jewelry. Despite the extensive losses to the reverse, the surviving front preserves the deity’s expressive features and the carefully balanced arrangement of his four arms. Finely cast, the four-armed deity seated with his legs folded and the right knee raised, his principal right hand held with the palm outward and his left holding a rosary. The upper hands support a discus and conch at shoulder level. His broad torso is adorned with layered beaded necklaces, a sacred thread, armlets, and bracelets. The face is strongly modeled with large almond-shaped eyes beneath sharply arched brows, a prominent nose, and gently smiling lips, framed by elongated loop earrings and surmounted by a tiered crown finely worked with ribbed and twisted bands. A vertical Vaishnava Tilaka marks the forehead, with further leaf- and flame-shaped motifs incised across the chest, abdomen, and upper arms. Dimensions: Height 29.2 cm (excl. stand), 35.1 cm (incl. stand) Mounted on a fitted wood stand, which dates from the mid-20th century or earlier. (2) Literature comparison: Compare a related brass figure of Shri Lakshmi lustrated by elephants, Orissa, dated to the 18th century, 23.5 cm high, in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, accession number M.74.40.1.
