Li Keran, Landscape with Flying Waterfall in Accumulated Ink, mounted, ink and colour on paper Li Keran (1907–1989), a native of Xuzhou, Jiangsu, was a grand master of modern Chinese painting. A disciple of Qi Baishi and Huang Binhong, he advocated “portraying the rivers and mountains of the motherland” and founded the distinctive “Li-style landscape”, exerting a far-reaching influence on the development of modern ink landscape painting. This layered-ink waterfall landscape depicts a mountain stream with plunging falls using his unique layered ink technique, built up through successive washes with rich, dense ink tones, exuding lush verdant vitality and vigorous spirit. The waterfall cascading down the high cliff like a white silk ribbon forms a striking contrast of light and shade with the dark ink forested peaks, with impressive luminous effect. A stone arch bridge spans the stream, with figures walking with staffs upon it, and mountain dwellings half-hidden among the wooded foothills, brimming with life. With a full, dense composition that integrates Western plein-air light and shadow concepts into the traditional brushwork system, it conveys a vast, profound atmosphere combining majestic vigour and poetic sentiment, embodying his signature stylistic traits of “darkness, fullness, dynamism and brightness” as a classic example of his layered-ink landscape from his mature period.
