A jinshi of 1836, he served as Hanlin Compiler, chief editor of the National History Bureau and Education Commissioner of Sichuan, and later taught at academies nationwide after his dismissal. Well-versed in classics, history and philology, he authored works including *Notes on the Classics from Xidaoweizhai Studio* and *Poems of Dongzhou Thatched Cottage*, and was a leading figure in Hunan’s poetic circle. A pillar of the late Qing stele calligraphy school, he mastered all script styles. Drawing on Yan Zhenqing and Northern Dynasties steles, he created the “suspended arm, reversed wrist” technique, merging stele and model traditions into a distinctive style with far-reaching influence on modern Chinese calligraphy.
