During the Han dynasty, the boar was viewed as a symbol of prosperity and good fortune, and featured in the highest grade of imperial sacrificial rituals. Jade boars were reserved for the aristocracy: worn as pendants in life to denote status, and interred as burial jades for protection in the afterlife. Carved from luminous white jade in openwork flat relief, this piece depicts a wild boar in mid‑gallop, with thrusting snout, sharp angular eyes, erect mane and tensed limbs. The bold, succinct carving conveys the refined vigour associated with Han‑period jade workmanship. A perforation is drilled through the body for suspension. Most surviving Han jade boars are rendered in the round in recumbent form; flat pendants of this galloping type are uncommon. A comparable jade boar was excavated from a Han tomb at Chang’an, Shaanxi, suggesting this style was prevalent in Han animal jade carving. Inheriting the realist tradition of the Qin and Han dynasties, it carries technical traits typical of the era.
