A Shijiahe culture celadon-white jade arc pendant (huang) with anthropomorphic mask, with damage The Shijiahe civilization, with a history of over 4,000 years, represents the pinnacle of prehistoric spiritual culture in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. The images of deities and eagles are central to its shamanistic tradition, revered as sacred symbols connecting the human world with the spirit world, and ultimately reaching the heavens. This jade hairpin was a ritual implement worn by the chief shaman of the tribe: its tip is carved with an image of an ancestral deity, used to receive divine pronouncements; its winding curves symbolize harmony with the energy of the earth. Originally a tool for untying knots, the hairpin acquired multiple symbolic meanings in shamanistic rituals, becoming a ritual implement for dispelling misfortune and connecting the human world with the spirit world. One of the rarest jade carvings among the Shijiahe cultural remains, only a handful exist in public and private collections worldwide—the British Museum holds a similar jade human head pendant. In prehistoric times, jade artifacts were entirely handcrafted using whetstones, requiring a great deal of manpower. Such sacred objects were reserved for shamanic elites and tribal leaders, hence their extremely limited production. Having withstood four thousand years of geological changes and historical upheavals, well-preserved jade carvings from the Shijiahe culture are extremely rare, serving as precious testaments to the spiritual beliefs and artifacts of the ancient Yangtze River civilization. This jade carving is arc-shaped, with one end carved into a human face with wide-open eyes, a broad nose, and cloud-like earlobes; the rest remains plain. The jade surface has a brownish luster, and both ends have perforations. Shijiahe jade deity statues are unique prehistoric sacrificial implements. Although damaged, this piece still retains its ancient charm.
