A bronze censer in the form of Laozi riding an ox, Qing dynasty Cast bronze, the censer takes the form of Laozi seated on an ox, the subject of the Daoist legend of the sage leaving the Hangu Pass. The elder's beard flows naturally and his eyes are gently closed, while the ox lowers its head in a leisurely pace. A circular opening on the back serves as the vent for incense. The bronze has an antique patina, and the drapery folds and bovine musculature are carefully modelled.
