This type of chairs is known among Chinese furniture connoisseurs as a sichutou guanmaoyi (‘four-ends-extended’ ‘official’s hat’ armchair), a name derived from the projection of the crestrail and armrests beyond the rear and front posts, respectively. Although these extended elements likely originated in more vernacular traditions of Chinese furniture, by the Ming and into the Qing dynasty the form had become fully assimilated into the refined taste of the literati. The broad sweep of the extended crestrail, in particular, conveyed distinction and status, and chairs of this type were often reserved for the most senior figures at a gathering.
