BIBLE, ENGLISH. [THE BYBLE. ANTWERP?: 1537.] 4 parts in one vol., folio, lacks all before **2 at beginning, and all after leaf Ci at end, woodcut illustrations, contemporary stamped calf over wooden boards, 35cm high Breamore House. The title page of the New Testament is that of 'Matthew's Version' of the Bible, which was brought out under the superintendence of John Rogers (c.1500-1555) and joins together the works of Tyndale and Coverdale, it is generally considered to be the first English Bible. 'Thomas Matthew' is largely believed to be a pseudonym of John Rogers (c.1500-1555), Tyndale's friend and the first martyr in the Marian prosecution, however some argue 'Matthew' stands for Tyndale's own name, which it was then dangerous to mention. This controversial edition was the precursor to 'The Great Bible' of 1539 and the 'Authorised Version' of 161l.
