拍品描述
Native American, Caddo, Mississippian culture, ca. 1000–1400 CE. A hemispherical earthenware bowl, hand-built from dark clay and burnished to a smoky, near-black surface. The upper register carries a crisp band of decoration: rows of fine punctate tooling framing a zone of diagonal cross-hatching, the incised lattice catching light against the matte body below. The rounded base and gently everted rim speak to a vessel meant for holding and serving, its walls thin yet sturdy from careful coiling and paddling. Produced by Caddo potters of the Mississippian tradition, whose ceramic craft ranks among the most refined in the ancient Southeast, the bowl unites utility and quiet elegance. The restrained ornament, confined to the shoulder and rim, reflects a decorative grammar in which incision and stippling articulate form without overwhelming it. Size: 4" H x 7.1" Diam (10.2 cm H x 18.0 cm Diam). The Caddo peoples flourished across what is now Arkansas, eastern Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma, participating in the broad Mississippian cultural sphere that dominated the Southeast and mid-continent between roughly 800 and 1500 CE. Their potters are celebrated for finely burnished dark wares and inventive incised and engraved motifs, produced without the wheel by coiling and paddle-and-anvil finishing. Bowls of this hemispherical form served domestic and mortuary functions alike, and the banded decoration of punctation and cross-hatching seen here is a hallmark of the tradition's rim treatment.
