拍品描述
Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1–300 CE. An oval carnelian intaglio, finely engraved with two standing female deities in a moment of divine endorsement. On the right, winged Victory wears a peplos falling in long vertical folds and raises a wreath to crown her companion. On the left stands Fortuna, robed and cradling a cornucopia, possibly with a rudder at her side. The cutter set both figures on a short groundline and modeled them with quick, confident drill and wheel work, so the drapery reads as rippling channels of light against the warm red-orange stone. Engraved in reverse to read correctly when pressed into wax, the gem probably served as a personal seal, likely once set in a finger ring. It also carried an auspicious image of success joined to good fortune. Size: 0.76" L x 0.62" W (1.9 cm L x 1.6 cm W). Fortuna was the Roman personification of chance and prosperity, and gem engravers built her image from a fixed set of attributes. The cornucopia promised abundance. The rudder showed her steering the course of human affairs, and a globe or wheel sometimes stood for her changeability. Victoria, the Roman counterpart of the Greek Nike, was invoked in public and private life alike. She appears constantly on coinage and in glyptic art, usually holding out a wreath or palm. When Victory crowns Fortuna, the scene works as a compact visual wish: may good fortune be met with triumph. Pairings like this were well suited to seal stones, which their owners used every day and wore close at hand. They worked as personal emblems and as small talismans of good luck.
