拍品描述

Ancient Near East, ca. 800–300 BCE. A group of eleven ancient weapons and implements: eight socketed bronze arrowheads, an iron point, a slender bronze rod, and a small copper bar. The arrowheads were cast with hollow sockets to fit onto the shaft. Their forms vary from leaf-shaped blades with a raised midrib to narrow, three-edged points. Several have a single backward-pointing spur at the base, which acted as a barb. The iron point is the largest piece. It has a tapering, leaf-shaped blade and a long tang. The bronze rod has a square cross-section and narrows to a fine tip, so it may have been a chisel or awl. The flat copper bar is rounded at the ends and may be an ingot or raw stock. Green, gray, and russet patinas cover the bronze and iron surfaces. Size of largest: 3.64" L x 0.4" W x 0.4" D (9.2 cm L x 1.0 cm W x 1.0 cm D). Socketed arrowheads like these were cast in two-piece molds. The archer fitted the hollow socket directly onto a reed or wooden shaft. Points with a single side spur, and the compact three-edged form, are usually linked to the spread of Scythian-type archery in the first millennium BCE. This type was used widely from the Eurasian steppe through Anatolia, Mesopotamia, and Persia, and it remained in use under the Achaemenid empire. Bronze arrowheads were still made after iron had become common for larger blades, which explains how both metals can appear in one group.
