Indian Odisha Carved Black Stone Tray and Bowl | Orissa, Hand-Carved

拍品描述

South Asia, India, Orissa, ca. 1400–1899 CE. A pair of hand-carved stone vessels, a broad shallow tray and a deeper round bowl, each cut from one block of dense dark stone. The tray has a flat floor framed by a low upright rim, and a shallow groove runs around its outer wall. On its working surface the dark ground breaks into pale, flecked mottling. The bowl rises from a flat base with gently flaring straight sides and a plain rounded lip. It is burnished to a soft, deep black sheen. Neither piece is decorated, so the appeal lies in clean geometry and the weight of the material. The pair were likely made for domestic use, perhaps for preparing or serving food. Size of largest: 1.5" H x 11.375" Diam (3.8 cm H x 28.9 cm Diam); Size of smallest: 2.375" H x 7.5" Diam (6.0 cm H x 19.1 cm Diam).
