Vintage South American, ca. 1925–1935 CE. Vintage and quite fun large leather satchel made in Peru between 1925 and 1930 by Dr. E. MacCornack. Dr. MacCornack owned property, gold mines and was a practicing physician in the area of Cuzco beginning around 1925. Extensively tooled with step and fan motifs, Inca imagery and a bit ironically, an Aztec calendar with ancient Peruvian visage. Further enhanced with cruise line sticker and Peruvian customs tag. Size: 16.75" L x 19" W x 2" D (42.5 cm L x 48.3 cm W x 5.1 cm D). Flap. The upper band of the flap holds a shield-shaped cartouche tooled with the monogram "E A M." To the left of the cartouche is a quiver of arrows with a tassel. To the right is the head of an Inca noble wearing large ear spools, with crossed arrows behind it. Above and below are bands of stepped fret designs with fan-shaped motifs, framed by narrow scroll borders. A brass latch closes the flap onto the front panel, which is tooled with a winged figure in a headdress and fan-shaped palmettes. Back. The back is tooled with a large version of the Aztec Sun Stone (Piedra del Sol). It sits on a field of small square rosettes, framed by stepped fret borders. Interior. Inside is an expanding file with several pockets and a full-length brass zipper. There is a carry handle on top. Labels. The front panel has a Grace Line baggage label (New York – South America – Caribbean Ports) and part of a Peruvian customs (aduana) label from Callao. The back has part of a second Grace Line label (New York – South & Central America) with a postage-style stamp. Together, the labels record the case's travel by steamship between New York and the west coast of South America.
