Central Europe, Austria, ca. 1850–1938 CE. A black pebble-grain post binder housing an accumulation of unused Austrian postage stamps, its spine labeled by hand "AUSTRIA UNUSED #1-718". Inside, printed album leaves lay out a space for every Scott catalog number from 1 through 718, a sequence that begins with the imperforate arms issues of the Habsburg empire and runs forward through the Franz Josef definitives, the First Republic, and the interwar commemoratives. The run is partial: many spaces remain vacant, so the album records both what was gathered and what the collector still hoped to find. Assembled to a catalog rather than to taste, it is the working document of a systematic philatelist, hinged and annotated in the manner standard to mid-century collecting practice. Size: 11.9" H x 10.8" W x 3" D (30.2 cm H x 27.4 cm W x 7.6 cm D). Scott 1 through 718 spans nearly a century of upheaval compressed into perforated paper. Scott 1 is the 1850 issue of the Austrian Empire, printed on hand-made paper with the imperial coat of arms, one of the earliest adhesive postage issues in continental Europe. The middle of the range carries the long reign of Franz Josef I, whose profile appears in successive redesigns, and includes the 1908 jubilee series marking his sixtieth year on the throne. After 1918 the numbering passes into the First Republic, where inflation-era surcharges, the Renner and Seipel charity issues, and the architecture and costume sets of the 1920s and early 1930s appear, ending shortly before the 1938 Anschluss suspended independent Austrian philately altogether. A country-run album of this kind is valued for its completeness against the catalog rather than for individual rarities, and the empty spaces are as informative as the filled ones.
