Kallstenius / 1910; inscribed in pencil "LKV 40" and in blue pencil "No. 36" all on the stretcher, likely in another hand 40 1/4 x 73 3/8 in. Other Notes: There are several old, partial labels verso. Swedish painter, graphic and decorative artist Gottfried Kallstenius is associated with the late 19th- and early 20th-century Swedish art scene. Born in Västervik, Sweden, he studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and later traveled in Europe, where he encountered different artistic traditions. Kallstenius became particularly known for his landscapes, portraits, and decorative compositions, often portraying the Swedish countryside and coastal scenery with atmospheric light and rich colors. His work reflects the transition between academic painting and the more expressive approaches that emerged around the turn of the twentieth century. Blacklight: It is a bit hard to read under blacklight but it appears as if there are a few pinhead-sized scattered touch-ups in places, as well as the likelihood of several small spots of touch-up in the lower half (mostly pea-sized and smaller, but a few dime-sized), within the forest floor, generally, most in a red-brown color. However, the latter could have been done by the artist. Frame: 53 1/2 x 87 x 5 1/2 in.
