A pair of Sevres porcelain plates from the Deltuf des Rozieres service Circa 1787 The centers painted with a single bird, within scrolling foliate gilt heightened bleu celeste borders interspersed by three vignettes with birds, all named to the undersides Blue interlaced Ls mark above painter's mark DT and letter date code KK to the right, gilder's mark HP and 2000 in gilt 2 pieces Diameter of each 9 1/2 in. By descent through the family Other Notes: Marjorie Merriweather Post (1887-1973) was an American businesswoman, philanthropist and art collector. Daughter and heiress to C.W. Post, founder of the Postum Cereal Company (later General Mills), she became one of the wealthiest women in American at the age of 27. Post was a style maven socialite, known for her “high style” taste in design and a legendary fashion sense embellished by an unrivaled jewelry collection. She traveled extensively, collecting art, furnishings and treasures along the way, discovering a particular love for French and Russian culture. In 1955, Post bought Hillwood Estate in Washington, D.C., as a primary residence and to house her prized collections. Today, Hillwood Estate, Museum and Gardens is open to the public, displaying her collections of French and Russian furniture and decorative arts, highlighted by Sevres porcelain and Faberge objets de vertu. The above offered plates are presumedly from a service purchased by M. Deltuf, Gitane-Antoine Deltuf des Rozieres, of Societe Deltuf Pere et Fils, a firm operating in Paris as a merchant and commercial intermediary in the luxury goods trade. Likely, Deltuf purchased the extensive service, including 72 assiettes (plates), for a client. The vignettes of a single bird in a landscape are based on illustrations from Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon’s the “Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux” of 1770-83. For further information on the service, see David Peters, Sevres Plates and Services of the 18th Century, 2015, Vol. IV, no. 88-4, pp. 857-859. A similar plate, also with letter date code KK and painter’s mark DT, offered Pescheteau-Badin, Hotel Drouot, Paris, January 28, 2021, lot 206. Condition reports are offered as a courtesy and are typically published in Moran's catalogue or can be made available upon request. The absence of a condition report does not imply that an item is free from defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of others. Buyers are responsible for determining to their own satisfaction the true nature and condition of any lot prior to bidding. Though buyers are not legally required to inspect lots prior to purchase, failure to do so may constitute a waiver of complaint that an item was not delivered in a condition equal to the existent condition at the auction.
