A group of four Sevres style porcelain cabinet plates Late 19th/early 20th century Comprising a pair of portrait plates and a pair decorated with figures in 18th century attire Blue painted interlaced Ls marks, some enclosing letters; portraits marked for subject 4 pieces Diameter of portrait plates 9 7/8 in.; diameter of cobalt pair 9 3/4 in. By descent through the family Other Notes: Marjorie Merriweather Post (1887-1973) was an American businesswoman, philanthropist and art collector. Daughter and heiress to C.W. Post, founder of the Postum Cereal Company (later General Mills), she became one of the wealthiest women in American at the age of 27. Post was a style maven socialite, known for her “high style” taste in design and a legendary fashion sense embellished by an unrivaled jewelry collection. She traveled extensively, collecting art, furnishings and treasures along the way, discovering a particular love for French and Russian culture. In 1955, Post bought Hillwood Estate in Washington, D.C., as a primary residence and to house her prized collections. Today, Hillwood Estate, Museum and Gardens is open to the public, displaying her collections of French and Russian furniture and decorative arts, highlighted by Sevres porcelain and Faberge objets de vertu.
