Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) Seated woman with a letter, from one of the rare deluxe examples of "Le Pater" folio, 1899 Watercolor, gouache and delicate hand-drawn outlines on a folded sheet of Japan paper, as issued Signed and dated by hand, possibly in either brushed ink or pencil, lower right: Mucha / 99 Sheet (as folded): 15 7/8 x 12 in; Sheet (when open): 15 7/8 x 24 in. Other Notes: This lot is sold together with an unsigned and undated certificate of authenticity issued by the gallery mentioned above. Listed with a title of "Le Pater," the abovementioned certificate states that this work is an "original watercolor on Japan paper," signed and dated by hand. The certificate also describes it as "From the complete deluxe suite - 1 of 10 books on Japan paper - book numbered '5.' From a total edition of 510. Printed by Champenois and Piazza, 1899, Paris." In 1899, Alphonse Mucha created an editioned folio called "Le Pater" [The Lord's Prayer]. Each example consisted of an illustrated cover, multiple printed images (both in color and in black and white) and text. The total edition of this folio was 510, done on several different types of paper. We were able to locate a copy of one of the standard "Le Pater" folios online, and there, a justification page image outlined the contents and various papers used for each segment of the entire project, 10 of which were designed to be far more special than the rest. The work offered here, in keeping with the justification page information we referenced while doing our research, was apparently originally painted for inclusion in one of those deluxe folios: "10 examplaires (numerotes de 1 a 10) sur japon, contenant une aquarelle originale de A. Mucha, une suite en couleurs sur japon, et une suite en noir sur chine." Framed under glass: 29 x 26 1/4 x 1 3/4 in. Condition reports are offered as a courtesy and are typically published in Moran's catalogue or can be made available upon request. The absence of a condition report does not imply that an item is free from defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of others. Buyers are responsible for determining to their own satisfaction the true nature and condition of any lot prior to bidding. Though buyers are not legally required to inspect lots prior to purchase, failure to do so may constitute a waiver of complaint that an item was not delivered in a condition equal to the existent condition at the auction.
