Paul Rivoire (1902-1984) "Triminis - Le Serre et Grand Ferrand" (Village near Triminis, The Greenhouse and Grand Ferrand) Watercolor on paper Signed and titled lower left: Paul Rivoire Sight: 18 x 24 1/2 in. Other notes: Paul Rivoire was a French post-impressionist who painted in the Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur region. Rivoire’s art was not only influenced by his contemporary, Matisse, but also by Cezanne, Van Gogh and Gauguin. As a young man, his instructors declared, "Rivoire stands on the shoulders of Cezanne. His remarkable talents will allow him to follow whatever path he chooses." In the 1930s, Parisian art critics lauded his "intimate, but vigorous and vibrant landscapes of exquisite quality..." (circa 1935, "Le Matin"). "Le Petit Dauphinois," in 1936, exclaimed, "... [His] works, notable in their composition and color, have established that this young artist is now to be counted among the most talented and original painters from Savoy." The Rivoire family was the official notary of France under the Ancient Regime. In the second half of the 19th century, the family established a silk factory. Rivoire inherited and eventually lost the family silk business during the great depression. Later in life he took up residence in a small one room apartment with his dog and died in Grenoble in 1984. Rivoire never sought fame and he only exhibited occasionally. He painted because his talent and love of art demanded it. Framed under glass: 21 1/2 x 28 x 2 in.
