A RARE PAIR OF FINELY CARVED CHINESE WHITE JADE VASES, QING DYNASTY, QIANLONG PERIOD (1735 - 1796) Finely carved from exceptionally even white jade of luminous, subtly translucent tone, each vase is elegantly potted with a flared mouth rising above a tall waisted neck flanked by openwork archaistic handles formed as stylised confronted dragons. The ovoid body is crisply decorated on either side with a large circular medallion enclosing the character shou (longevity), framed by a narrow diaper band and further accentuated by a row of lappets above the foot. It's with a finely carved fitted zitan wood stand and a fitted box. The present pair exemplifies the Qianlong Emperor's admiration for antiquity and his passion for jade carving, combining a vessel form derived from archaic bronzes with auspicious motifs favoured by the Qing court. The restrained decoration accentuates the purity of the stone, while the precise symmetry of the carving reflects the extraordinary technical standards achieved by the Imperial Workshops during the High Qing period. The elegant balance between archaistic form, auspicious symbolism and flawless material places the present vases among the most refined expressions of eighteenth-century imperial jade carving. 15cm high PROVENANCE: An important private collection, Tokyo.
