(frame) n.b. Artist Howard L. Hill was a Victorian-era landscape and sporting painter who may be best known as the maternal grandfather of the iconic American illustrator Norman Rockwell. Although Hill died before Rockwell was born, Norman Rockwell is said to have kept one of his grandfather's bird paintings in his studio. Rockwell cited Hill's highly detailed compositions as a major influence on his own meticulous style. Born in England, Hill immigrated to the United States in the 1850s, briefly working for Currier and Ives before establishing himself as an independent artist in New York. He was primarily a sporting and genre painter, renowned for his highly detailed portrayals of birds (quail, ducks, partridges), hunting dogs, and charming English farmyard scenes. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1865 and 1866. Inventory Code: 3BA-5
