Hanging Scroll, Ancient Pine on Rocky Bank, by Shen Zhou, Ink on Paper Ink on paper, old mounting hanging scroll. The painting depicts ancient pines on rocky shore. In the foreground, two tall ancient pines stand upright with dense, sturdy pine needles, roots twisting among slope rocks rendered with solid and moist brushwork. Distant view features vast lake water and lightly sketched distant mountains, creating a spacious and serene landscape. Poem inscription on upper left: *The ancient pine on rocky bank nearly brushes the sky; planted by hand, it has lived eight thousand years. No need to ask the master’s age; born before the South Mountain and North Sea. Inscribed by Shen Zhou in autumn of Bingwu year*, with seal. Title slip on upper right: Ancient Pine on Rocky Bank, painted as gift by Elder Yunxi, Bing Shan Gaofu, with seal. Shen Zhou is the founding master of Wu School of painting. This work carries simple and restrained brushwork inherited from Yuan painters, combining grandeur and quiet elegance with strong antique charm, an excellent landscape sketch. The paper bears natural signs of aging, original mounting intact with provenance.
