This painting follows the academic flower-and-bird style of the Song Dynasty on aged silk with deep mellow tone. A flowering branch stretches across the composition with verdant leaves and bright red blossoms. A bird perches on the twig, meticulously rendered with fine brushwork for feathers, vivid and lifelike, turning its head with lively expression. Executed in meticulous heavy colour technique with delicate outlines and refined tinting, fully embodying the Song dynasty spirit of painting from life. Inscription **Shen Mengjian** at lower right of painting, accompanied by seal. Shen Mengjian was a flower-and-bird painter of Southern Song Dynasty, excelling at birds, insects and plants. He inherited the imperial painting academy tradition of Xuanhe era with realistic modelling and exquisite brushwork. The silk retains ancient texture with natural aged patina, a fine example of Song academic flower-and-bird painting. 绢本设色，旧裱镜心。本幅为宋代院体花鸟风格，古绢底色沉厚。画面绘花枝横斜，翠叶舒展，红花盛放；枝头栖禽，羽毛刻画精工，细笔丝毛，神态灵动，回眸顾盼，生机盎然。整作采用工笔重彩，线条细腻，赋色雅致，深得宋人写生之妙。 画面右下角落款**沈孟坚**，钤印章。沈孟坚为南宋花鸟画家，善画禽鸟虫草，承袭宣和院画传统，造型写实，笔法精微。此件作品保存古绢质感，岁月包浆自然，是宋代院体花鸟精品。
