Executed in bold freehand brushwork, the gnarled old plum trunks are rendered with forceful heavy ink strokes with rich dry-wet variations. Twisting branches stretch across the composition, densely covered with bright red blossoms. The striking contrast between black ink and vermilion flowers conveys vibrant vitality. Red plum is Guan Shanyue’s signature motif, symbolizing fortitude and the arrival of spring.
