Executed in splash-ink freehand style, the lotus leaves are rendered with bold washes of ink with rich tonal variation. The main lotus flower is painted in striking crimson petals with vivid green stalks, the stamen dotted with yellow and turquoise accents. Bold and unrestrained colours deliver strong visual impact. Breaking the conventional gentle aesthetic of traditional lotus paintings, it bears Huang Yongyu’s distinctive colourful ink style.
