It depicts a maiden from the Western Regions alongside a donkey. The donkey is rendered in splash ink with rich tonal gradation, bold and powerful brushwork. Grazing with head lowered, the beast is vividly structured with lifelike fur texture. Behind it stands a Uyghur maiden in profile, wearing an embroidered cap and long braids, dressed in colourful top and red skirt, barefoot among flowers. She gently covers her mouth with one hand, presenting a gentle and lively expression. The background features a freehand reed pond in pale washes, with swallows flying overhead and wildflowers covering the ground, conveying the pastoral scenery of the frontier. The cursive inscription on the left is unrestrained, paired with seals. Huang Zhou is famous for frontier scenes and paintings of donkeys.
