Format: ink and colour on paper, figure painting Seals: One red artist seal beside the inscription on lower right Publication: No record of publication Description This hanging scroll *Western Regions Travellers* by Ma Zhensheng is an excellent freehand figure painting themed on western China. It depicts travellers crossing the western desert. An elderly white-bearded man rides a black donkey, playing a flute with serene expression. Behind him, a camel carries a veiled woman. The camel is painted with massive ink washes to convey volume. A black hound follows on the lower left, bringing vitality to the journey. The distant background is rendered with light broad ink strokes forming hazy woods and clouds, creating the vast, desolate atmosphere of the western wilderness. Figures are concisely and vividly modelled. The brushwork blends unrestrained freehand expression with realistic depiction, accented by subtle colouring for a simple and solid aesthetic. Signed and sealed on the right. The work is full of life of Silk Road travellers with a powerful, expansive mood.
