Format: Hanging scroll, ink and colour on paper, flower-and-insect painting Seals: Two red seals on upper left, one red seal at lower right Publication: No recorded publication Description This is a fine flower-and-insect painting by Qi Baishi. A bamboo basket is painted with bold, unrestrained ink strokes, filled with plump golden loquats rendered in bright yellow wash with dark ink calyx marks. Delicate grey ink branches weave through the fruit. At the lower right rests a grasshopper, executed in Qi’s signature meticulous style; every hair, wing and limb is finely depicted, lifelike and vivid. The dramatic contrast between freehand basket and fruit, and the highly detailed insect, embodies Qi Baishi’s iconic “meticulous insects with freehand plants”. The brushwork is concise and lively, colours bright and full of vitality, symbolizing abundant harvest, a representative work of his mature period.
