It depicts autumn scenery of Dongting Lake. Distant mountains are rendered with splash painting of azurite and malachite pigments, forming gorgeous blue-green tones against the glowing golden paper base. The foreground rocks are painted with thick ink, dotted with bright red autumn trees. On the vast lake floats a small boat with a solitary scholar. White pigment depicts curling cloud, creating a wonderful interplay of void and solid form. The work combines traditional Chinese landscape language with modern splash-colour technique, the golden paper enhances its elegant and luxurious quality. The inscription “Boating on Dongting Lake” expresses the literati’s wish for free roaming in nature.
