Description This painting Secluded Dwelling Among Woods is a classic literati landscape hanging scroll by Lu Yanshao, published in *Selected Works of Lu Yanshao* with complete publication record. The foreground features rugged rocks outlined and textured with rich ink. Several ancient pines stand tall in the middle ground with dense pine needles in layered turquoise tones. Beneath the pines, a thatched cottage sits beside the stream, a scholar rests by the window enjoying the scenery. Distant rolling hills are rendered with light ink and pale washes, with mist creating a spacious far-reaching view. Executed with consummate brushwork, the texture strokes for rocks and dotting for trees are typical of Lu’s signature style. The composition balances solid and void, density and sparsity. It depicts the literati’s ideal of seclusion in mountains and forests. This fine landscape from Lu’s mature period is backed by publication, boasting great academic and collectible value.
