A master of flower-and-bird painting of Beijing-Tianjin School in the Republic of China. Student of Wang Mengbai and Chen Shizeng. Famous for combining meticulous and freehand brushwork. He learned from Yuan masters and Hua Yan (Xinluo Shanren), with vivid forms and elegant colouring. Seals: Red and white artist seals on each panel, including Bolong, Master of Chuncao Tang, Changba Buyi Description This set of four flower-and-bird scrolls is a representative mature work by Yan Bolong. The four panels form a complete suite. Each depicts seasonal flowers and birds: pine with paradise flycatcher, chrysanthemum with golden pheasant, magnolia with perching birds, wisteria with sparrows, all classic auspicious motifs. Executed in Yan’s signature mixed technique: tree trunks and branches painted in freehand, while birds and blossoms rendered with delicate fine line drawing. Colours are bright yet refined, with rich tonal variations of ink. Each panel works independently, while forming a unified ensemble when displayed together. Well-preserved with complete inscriptions and seals.
