拍品描述
earthenware 19 1/2 x 11 x 5 3/4 in, 49.5 x 27.9 x 14.6 cm The Historical Buddha with defined Greco-Roman influences seated in lotus position on a high rectangular base, his hands in the gesture of teaching while wearing a simple flowing robe, the head leaning forward with gentle visage, third eye and a high top knot, the reverse hollowed. Exhibiting a pronounced Hellenistic influence, this rare Gandharan figure of the historical Buddha Shakyamuni is exceptional for its fluid modeling and vitality. While many stucco and terracotta sculptures from the region present a rigid, static frontality, the present example achieves a remarkably dynamic posture. The artist has expertly rendered the voluminous folds of the sanghati (monastic robe) as it drapes over the shoulder and cascades between the crossed legs, showcasing sophisticated three-dimensional depth and naturalism. The Buddha’s expressive posture is heightened by finely-modeled, delicate fingers held in an articulate gesture. A subtle tilt of the head imparts a serene intimacy, drawing focus to a compassionate face defined by downcast, meditative eyes and soft facial contours. Topped with a classic wavy ushnisha, the sculpture harmonizes classical Mediterranean realism with profound Buddhist spirituality.
