A CHINESE WHITE SOAPSTONE CARVING OF LIONS, SIGNATURE OF FENG JIUHE (1928 - 2022) Feng Jiuhe (1928 - 2022), also known by the art name Qiuhe, was a native of Fuzhou, Fujian Province, with ancestral roots in Changle. In 1943, he began studying the art of Shoushan stone carving under the renowned master Huang Hengsong. Specializing in three-dimensional carving, Feng was particularly celebrated for his depictions of flower baskets, fruits, and animal subjects such as groups of pigs. During his lifetime, he was honoured as a Master of Chinese Arts and Crafts, a Senior Arts and Crafts Artist, and a Special-grade Master Artisan of Fuzhou. He also served as Senior Advisor to the Fuzhou Shoushan Stone Industry Association, Advisor to the Fujian Shoushan Stone Culture and Art Research Society, and was a member of the China National Arts and Crafts Society. 6.3cm wide; 3cm high PROVENANCE: The Estate of W.y. Thomas Kwok (1944 - 2017), Hong Kong, acquired in Hong Kong in the 80s. Born in Macau, Mr. Kwok studied architecture in Melbourne and built a four-decade career with Wong & Ouyang, shaping Hong Kong's skyline. His collecting began with Japanese occupation stamps (1941 - 1945), issued during Japan's wartime administration of Hong Kong and other territories. Gradually, his passion shifted to jade, inspired by visits to auction houses. At the time, Hong Kong's auction scene was emerging with Sotheby's debuted in 1973, Christie's in 1986. By the late 1980s, Kwok was attending smaller sales, joining the city's first generation of serious collectors. His jade holdings embody not only technical excellence and cultural symbolism but also the personal evolution of a connoisseur whose interests bridged philately, architecture, and Chinese art heritage.
