OTHER NOTES: The inspiration for batik painting came to Chuah Thean Teng in 1953 following the closure of his Penang batik cloth factory. Rather than discard his remaining stock of dyes, cloth and wax, he began experimenting with figurative compositions, adapting the traditional batik process into a fine art medium. After years of refinement, Teng pioneered the transformation of batik from a textile craft into a recognised artistic form, creating works distinguished by their fluid figures, vibrant colours and modernist compositions.
