Property from an old Hong Kong family collection 26.3 cm The Yongzheng reign (r. 1723–35) is particularly noted for refined monochromes and archaistic porcelains that closely emulate the forms and glazes of Song ceramics. Their subtle colours and restrained forms reflect the emperor’s literati-inflected taste for classical elegance. Palace records attest that Song-period originals were sent to Jingdezhen for close reproduction; the court term fang (仿) denotes faithful imitation rather than loose pastiche. Technically impeccable yet deliberately antiquarian in appearance, these porcelains embody a lyrical recreation of a venerable past. The present piece imitates a celebrated Ru ware from the Northern Song dynasty. Of the six known surviving examples, five are housed in the Taipei Palace Museum; foremost among them is the piece without glaze crackles (accession no. guci-17851). Qing dynasty imitations such as the present piece are very rare, only two other examples appear to be known: one in the Taipei Palace Museum, and the other in the Beijing Palace Museum. The Taipei example was most likely produced under the supervision of Tang Ying, and bears a Qianlong imperial poem praising Ru ware (accession no. guci-17790). The Beijing example, attributed to the Qianlong period, is described as an imitation of Guan ware (accession no. gu-153271).
