A Nepalese or Tibetan patinated bronze figure of Vajrapani, 19th/20th C. H 16 cm The sculpture depicts the wrathful Bodhisattva Vajrapani standing in the dynamic 'pratyalidha' warrior posture upon a beaded oval lotus pedestal. His raised right hand brandishes a large thunderbolt sceptre ('vajra') horizontally, while his left hand is held before his chest in 'tarjani-mudra' (the warding gesture), clutching a coiled lasso or rope ('pasha'). Vajrapani is one of the earliest-appearing bodhisattvas in Mahayana Buddhism. He is the protector and guide of Gautama Buddha and rose to symbolize the Buddha's power.
