An exceptional Brussels faience blue and white ointment pot or albarello with Saint Michael slaying the dragon, ca. 1700 H 17 cm 'Zinzib. Cond' is a historical Latin apothecascriotie or recipe abbreviation for 'Zinziber conditum', or candied ginger (or ginger preserved in sugar/honey), which was used in medieval and early modern pharmacopoeias as a medicinal sweet, digestive aid, or basic ingredient in concoctions (electuaria). According to George Dansaert (Anciennes faïences de Bruxelles, Brussels, 1922, p. 175), this type of albarello can be attributed to Corneille Mombaers. However, a similar piece in the collection of the Gruuthuse Museum (Inv. XXI.O.0624) is marked with the year 1680. Given this dating, our item could also be attributed to the workshop of Vanden Haute, which was active earlier than Mombaers.
