A German carved oak relief panel depicting the unexpected visit of the Jewish queen Esther to the Persian king Ahasuerus, 17th C. 79,5 x 37 cm The text and the depiction refer to a biblical story from the Book of Esther. She is gripped by deep fear and mourning because the Jewish people are threatened with destruction by the wicked minister Haman. She risks her life by approaching King Ahasuerus (Xerxes) uninvited and inviting him to a banquet, ultimately saving her people (Ahasuerus extended his golden scepter toward her as a sign of mercy).
