A large and exceptional Flemish carved oak altarpiece depicting the swooning of the Virgin Mary, Antwerp or Brussels, c. 1500. H 47 - L 148 cm - D 11 cm This remarkable altarpiece group, dating from around 1500, can undoubtedly be attributed to Antwerp or Brussels. No maker's marks are visible, though they are almost certainly concealed by the later mounting. This deeply carved relief is notable for its composition, featuring Saint John, the Virgin Mary, and Mary Magdalene surrounded by numerous figures, including Roman soldiers. The elegant and charming landscape seems as if it were lifted straight from the paintings of the Flemish Primitives.
