Gnarled pines grow by the cliff where a scholar stands gazing at the sea of clouds; distant peaks float above the mist and waves roll below. A signature and seal are at the upper left. The work is in the blue-green manner, with outlined rocks filled with rich mineral colours and cloud and water drawn in flowing lines. Qiu Ying, c. 1498–1552, style name Shifu, hao Shizhou, was a native of Taicang who worked in Suzhou. Of artisan origin, he studied under Zhou Chen and became a master of meticulous figure, landscape and pavilion painting, especially the blue-green manner, with precise outlines and rich colour. With Shen Zhou, Wen Zhengming and Tang Yin he is counted among the Four Masters of the Ming, and his copies of Song models were said to be indistinguishable from the originals.
