DONG YUAN, LEVEL-DISTANCE LANDSCAPE WITH A STREAM BRIDGE, INK AND COLOUR ON PAPER, HANGING SCROLL 尺寸:L:95cm;W:62cm 紙本設色,立軸。 A hanging scroll, ink and colour on paper. A level-distance landscape rises with jagged peaks and sparse trees, village houses nestling at the foot by the water, a small bridge spanning the stream where an elderly scholar with a staff crosses. The rocks are rendered in blue-green with hemp-fibre texture strokes, soft clouds drifting between. Large square red seals appear at the top, with further collector seals at the lower right and a signature at the left edge. The composition is expansive. Dong Yuan, active tenth century, style name Shuda, was a native of Zhongling, modern Jinxian, Jiangxi, who served the Southern Tang as Rectifier of the Northern Park, hence Dong Beiyuan. He painted the riverine hills of the south, developing the hemp-fibre texture stroke and moss dots that founded the Southern school; with Juran he is known as Dong-Ju, the fountainhead of later literati landscape.
