SHI TAO, BOAT ON A GREAT RIVER WITH A WANDERING SCHOLAR, INK ON PAPER, HANGING SCROLL 尺寸:L:118cm;W:40cm 紙本墨筆,立軸。 A hanging scroll, ink on paper. A broad river scene unfolds: a cliff faces the water, distant peaks rise across the stream in pale ink, and a small boat rows across. In the foreground, rocks and trees frame a few cottages where a scholar with a staff wanders in search of solitude. The rocks are textured in wet-and-dry washes with varied ink tones, the mood vast. A long cursive poem is inscribed at the upper right, signed by the monk Shi Tao. Shitao (1642–c. 1707), born Zhu Ruoji, a descendant of the Ming Jingjiang prince, became a monk in early Qing under the name Yuanji, with the hao Bitter Gourd Monk and Master of the Pure Wash Studio. From Guangxi, he settled in Yangzhou in later life and painted landscapes with uninhibited ink, opposing blind imitation and insisting on using my own method. His Sayings on Painting has been enormously influential.
