Beneath a willow, two white horses stand facing each other, one lowering its head and the other arching its neck; the musculature and bone structure are modelled with Western chiaroscuro, the coat rendered naturalistically. An old willow with drooping branches sweeps toward the ground; beyond, a flat desert stretches to a distant horizon. A large square red seal is at the top and a signature at the lower left. Giuseppe Castiglione (1688–1766), a Milanese Jesuit missionary, reached Beijing in 1715 and served the Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong emperors as a court painter, rising to the third rank. He adapted Western chiaroscuro and perspective to Chinese silk, excelling at birds, flowers, animals and portraits, and also participated in designing the Western mansions of the Yuanming Yuan. He died in Beijing with the honorific title of Vice-minister.
