Both depict river scenes: one shows a steep cliff with a leaning pine, a scholar standing above while boat passengers chat below; the other opens onto a wide river with a fishing boat rowing between tree-lined banks. The rocks are rendered in blue-green and pale red, the lines clear and vigorous, long poems inscribed on each. An original wood box accompanies. Zhang Daqian (1899-1983), born Zhang Yuan in Neijiang, Sichuan, studied painting with his elder brother Shanzi and later studied dyeing in Kyoto. He first made his name through near-perfect copies after Shi Tao and Bada Shanren. From 1941 to 1943 he spent over two years copying murals at Dunhuang, transforming his style. Living later in South America, the United States and finally Taiwan, he developed his splash-ink and splash-colour manner.
