One depicts wisteria with drooping purple racemes and vines twisting like seal script; one shows peonies in full glory with leaves brushed in dark ink; one paints plum blossoms on rugged branches dotted with red flowers. Each is inscribed with a long poem in Shitao-style running script, signed by Wu Changshuo (Laofou), with several seals. An original wood box accompanies. Wu Changshuo (1844-1927), born Jun in Anji, Zhejiang, was a master of poetry, calligraphy, painting and seal carving. He drew on Qin-Han seals and became the first president of the Xiling Seal Society. His calligraphy focused on the Stone-Drum inscriptions, and his flower painting, derived from Xu Wei, Bada, Shitao and Li Shoutang, applied seal-script strength to the branches. He was the founding figure of the Haipai school.
