A monk sits bare-chested beneath clumps of bamboo and banana leaves, a red sutra volume leaning beside him and a ruyi scepter in his hand, his gaze distant. The bamboo leaves are brushed in blue-green with a free, decisive touch; the monk's robe is coloured sparingly. Two long colophons in running script are placed at the right and below, with several seals. The figure drawing is concise and relaxed. Ren Bonian (1840–1896), given name Yi, from Shaoxing, Zhejiang, learned drawing from his father as a boy and later sold paintings in Shanghai, becoming a leading figure of the Shanghai school. A master of figure, flower-and-bird and landscape, he handled line with rhythmic certainty and colour with a clear, bright restraint, absorbing Western sketching without losing Chinese brush idiom. He worked alongside Wu Changshuo, Xugu and Pu Hua.
