ZHENG BANQIAO, INK BAMBOO AND ROCK, INK ON PAPER, HANGING SCROLL 尺寸:L:110cm;W:53cm 紙本墨筆,立軸。 A hanging scroll, ink on paper. Several slender bamboos are painted with sparse leaves brushed in graded ink, the stalks thin and upright with clear nodes; a pale ink rock is set behind them. At the right a running-script poem is inscribed in an elegant hand, signed by Zheng Xie (Banqiao), with two seals. Zheng's bamboo aims at spirit rather than likeness, sparse and clear; poem, calligraphy, painting and seals are combined. Zheng Xie (1693–1765), hao Banqiao, from Xinghua, Jiangsu, became a jinshi in 1736 and served as magistrate in Fanxian and Weixian, Shandong. He resigned after pleading for disaster relief against his superiors and lived in Yangzhou selling paintings. One of the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou, he is celebrated for calligraphy, poetry and painting of orchids, bamboo and rock, his running-script leaning on clerical script.
