MI FU, POEM IN RUNNING SCRIPT, INK ON SILK, HANGING SCROLL 尺寸:L:134cm;W:54cm 絹本行書,立軸。 A hanging scroll, running-script calligraphy on silk. The silk is dark brown, the ink rich and deep. It transcribes a seven-character ancient poem, the brushwork spontaneous and angled with clear press-and-lift contrasts, mixed use of tip and side brush, sweeping with a wind-driven force. Several red collector seals are placed among the columns. The work is dated and signed by Mi Fu. Mi's calligraphy is known for its sweeping brush-wiping manner, representative of the expressive Song aesthetic. Mi Fu (1051–1107), style name Yuanzhang, from Xiangyang, served the Northern Song court as Doctor of Painting and Calligraphy under Huizong and rose to Vice-minister of Rites, hence the honorific Mi of the Southern Ministry. Known for his sweeping running script—rhythmic, angled and spontaneous—he ranks with Su Shi, Huang Tingjian and Cai Xiang as one of the Four Great Song calligraphers. In landscape he created the misty cloud-mountain manner associated with his name.
