Small regular characters transcribe a passage of Buddhist scripture, the script restrained and refined, every stroke calm and unhurried, signed by the monk Hong Yi and sealed. An original paulownia storage box accompanies the work. In his later years Hong Yi's calligraphy became plain and harmonious, stripped of all bravura, a classic of modern Buddhist writing. Hong Yi (1880–1942), secular name Li Shutong, was born in Tianjin to a family of Zhejiang origin. He studied painting and music at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts before returning to teach in China. In 1918 he took monastic vows at Hupao Temple in Hangzhou, later becoming the revival master of the Nanshan Vinaya school. His early calligraphy followed the stele tradition; after ordination it turned plain and harmonious, known as the Hong Yi style.
